The truly compassionate person hands out compassion in free and generous doses rather than doling it out in careful, scanty amounts. God goes so far as to liken true compassion to a mother's compassion for her child. Who will rise in the middle of the night to hold a child with fever and check temperatures throughout the night? Who will run back to the store for the fourth time that week to pick up one more item for a school project? Who will reinforce discipline by firmly adhering to an unpopular restriction? One whose heart is filled with compassion.
God showed his compassion to us by sending Christ to die for us while we were sinners and yet sinners. He nurses our wounds even when he isn’t the one who caused them. When our bodies drag and our spirits sag, it takes a heart committed to God and the infiltrating power of his Holy Spirit to be compassionate toward us. It takes God and him working through us to bring compassion to those who need it. I’m so grateful, I don’t know about you, but he’s good, even when I don’t deserve his compassion!!
Isaiah 66: 12-14
Isaiah 66: 12-14
For this is what the Lord says:
I will extend peace to her like a river, and wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dangled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem. When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass; the hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants, but his fury will be shown to his foes.
