If someone walks up to you and hit you, what would your reaction be?  Would you hit them back or would you just act as if nothing happened?
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid but gives us power, love and self-discipline”.  There are things the enemy knows that if he hits us in the face (hypothetically), we would react to it. But what begins to happen is, he begins to control us by hitting us; and sometimes, we just want the pain from the blows to stop so we begin to give in and retaliate on whom ever we see.
But what if we didn’t show a reaction to the enemy’s blows when someone intentionally says or does something against us and we actually had self-control, what do you think their reactions would be?
In Matthew 4:1-11, when Satan was trying to tempt Jesus, what if He would have given in to temptation?  Satan would have had control over Jesus by Jesus trying to prove to Satan who He was. Know who you are and know whose you are, and have self-control over you and your actions so no one can use them against you.
